Dealing With Rejection

The thing everyone seems to fear. Whether it is being rejected by a potential date or having your idea shot down by investors, the fear of rejection can paralyze a person and make them inactive in order to avoid the chance of being rejected. The missed opportunity then transforms into regret as you wander what would have happened had you not let your fear get the best of you. Regret is one of the worst feelings in the world and if you really think about it, is a lot scarier than rejection.

In order to conquer ones fear of rejection it may help to change the way one looks at it. Normally a person views being rejected as an indicator that one is not good enough or is lacking in one way or another. Instead of putting all of the focus on yourself try looking at it from the other persons point of view. For example a guy who is rejected by a girl when he asks for a date, may think that he is being rejected because he is not good looking or a variety of other self-deprecating reasons, when in reality the girl may have actually had some other plans for the night the date was proposed, may already have a boyfriend, or is simply not interested in dating at the moment. The same goes for a person who goes to an investor with an idea and is rejected. The investor may not have had the money to invest, or is not experienced enough in the industry that your idea is in to make an investment. There are millions of potential reasons that a person may say no, so why focus on the ones that lower your self-esteem.

If you want to be successful at anything you are going to have to accept that rejection is going to happen. The trick is to not let it get you down. Learn from the experience and continue forward. Often times the reason why you were rejected is because something better is coming along. Just think, the girl may have turned the guy down so that he will later ask and date a more beautiful and kind young lady. And the investor may have turned down the idea so that it can be picked up later on by someone who is able to invest even more money. If you keep a positive attitude and continually expect good things, rejection should be nothing to fear.
